DescriptionThis terrazzo floor fills the semicircular footprint of the rotunda with a night sky. Concentric arcs of brass evoke the time-lapse motion of stars. Chips of glass and mirror within the terrazzo matrix emulate the sparkle of distant stars. Clouds and a horizon of forested hills complete the transformation of the room's floor into a panoramic landscape. The overall effect is a spatial inversion that opens a vast imaginative space beneath the room, so that down becomes up, indoors becomes outdoors, day becomes night. The circular perspective amplifies the visual and spatial experience of the room, reinforcing its uniqueness as an architectural space while introducing an entirely new illusory layer that prompts thinking about scale, perspective, and the passage of time.
