Jonathan Borofsky

Jonathan Borofsky (CFA 1964) is an influential American conceptual artist and sculptor best known for his monumental, large-scale public installations that blend personal and universal themes.

Born on December 24, 1942, in Boston, Massachusetts, Borofsky received his Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in 1964. He continued his studies in France at the École de Fontainebleau before earning his Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from Yale University in 1966.

His work often explores human consciousness and connectivity, frequently incorporating symbols from his own subconscious, such as his documented dreams. A key conceptual element in his practice is his long-running project of counting to infinity, where he marks each finished artwork with the number he has reached at the time of its completion. While he has worked across media, including painting and printmaking, he is most widely recognized for his towering public sculptures installed in cities worldwide, such as CMU's own "Walking to the Sky."
