Carol KumataAmerican, born 1949

Carol Kumata (American, b. 1949) is a sculptor and Professor Emerita of Art at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). She joined the CMU School of Art in 1979 after earning her MFA from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and taught sculpture for 42 years until her retirement in 2021. Kumata's studio work incorporates diverse materials, from traditional metalsmithing to mixed media and found objects, spanning a range of scales from hand-holdable pieces to room-sized installations. Her art often uses visual puns to reflect on the history of objects and comment on the fragile and ephemeral nature of the human condition.
