Jessica StockholderCanadian-American, born 1959
Jessica Stockholder is a Canadian-American artist known for her pioneering, multimedia installations often described as "paintings in space." Born in Seattle, Washington, in 1959, she creates complex, colorful, and idiosyncratic works that challenge the boundaries between painting, sculpture, and the surrounding architecture. Her installations often incorporate a cacophonous array of everyday and industrial objects, such as furniture, plastic baskets, and construction materials, alongside bold color and formal abstraction. Stockholder holds an MFA from Yale University and has exhibited her influential work internationally for decades.
